Well I found a clumsy workaround for my laptop onboard Conexant AC97 sound card:
I had purchased a headset/microphone combo for use with Skype some time ago (and it mostly sits around collecting dust) (Altec Lansing AHS302i) that also includes a USB dongle, which both the headset and microphone connectors plug-in to. I, on a lark, decided to see if Vista would recognize the thing and it did. I then unplugged the headset (green) plug from the dongle and plugged in my speakers, and PRESTO!!! Sound! So I guess, Bob really is my uncle...
